An Octopus Hydraulic Linear Actuator provides an efficient solution for driving the rudder on boats with mechanical steering. This device combines an Octopus reversing pump with a marine hydraulic cylinder that mounts on the rudder tiller-arm or quadrant. When the autopilot is not active, the cylinder operates freely with the rudder. When engaged, a solenoid valve ensures the cylinder is locked in place, allowing steering signals from the pilot to control the D.C. motor which, in turn, moves the pump and cylinder. Upon deactivation, the solenoid valve disconnects the autopilot from the rudder. A translucent oil reservoir makes it easy to monitor fluid levels. With only five moving parts, this actuator offers reliability and service simplicity, preferred by offshore mariners. Each unit is shipped fully filled with oil, eliminating the need for additional plumbing.
