The Octopus 7" Hydraulic Linear Drive is a reliable and effective solution for operating the rudder on boats equipped with mechanical steering systems. This linear actuator combines an Octopus reversing pump and a marine hydraulic cylinder, designed to be mounted directly onto the rudder tiller-arm or quadrant.
During normal operation when the autopilot is not engaged, the actuator moves freely with the rudder. Once the autopilot is activated, a solenoid valve engages, locking the cylinder in place to follow steering signals from the pilot. The D.C. motor drives the pump to reposition the cylinder as needed. Upon de-energization, the solenoid valve smoothly disconnects the autopilot from the rudder.
Featuring a small translucent oil reservoir, users can easily monitor fluid levels. Built with only five moving parts, this actuator delivers mechanical simplicity, enhancing reliability and ease of service compared to complex gear and screw actuators—ideal for offshore mariners. The units are shipped pre-filled with oil, eliminating the need for additional plumbing.
